Darling _ tourist Spot 1

The small town of Darling is situated 23 km inland along the Western Cape Coast of South Africa. Darling was established in 1853 and named after the Lieutenant Governor of the Cape at that time, Sir Charles Henry Darling when his farm, Langfontein was established.

This charming little town is renowned for its stunning displays of wildflowers in spring as well as its rapidly growing recognized wine district which includes five wine cellars producing some spectacular wines. Recently this beautiful area of the Cape West Coast has become a recognized viticultural region on account of the quality of the wines produced there.

Due to its proximity to Cape Town, only about an hours drive away, Darling is an ideal spot for a weekend getaway. It is the home of Pieter-Dirk Uys’s “Evita se Perron” Theatre, restaurant and Cabaret Venue.

Darling truly transports the visitor into a former era with its delightful Victorian Homes that have been restored with love and attention and its very beautiful ancient trees. Visitors can wander through this charming little village with many antique and craft shops as well as art galleries, or because it is only 23 km from the coast, spend a day on the beach at Yzerfontein.

Close to Darling is the Private Buffelsfontein Game and Nature Reserve. This Malaria free zone offers game drives twice daily allowing visitors the chance to experience beautiful scenery and splendid wildlife.

At the beginning of spring in South Africa the Front room Festival (Voorkamerfest) takes place in Darling.  This unique festival has been taking place annually since 2004 and is regarded in South Africa as well as abroad as one of the world’s most novel cultural events of its kind.

Accommodation is available in Hotels, Guest Houses, Lodges and B&B’s to suit all tastes.
