The Orange Free State – today known just as the Free State is the Judicial Capital of South Africa. The Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa is situated in the Free State capital of Bloemfontein.(Click here for map) The immense flatlands of the Free State, agreeable climate and rich soil are perfect for agriculture to flourish. Asparagus, cherries, potatoes and sunflowers are just some of the crops cultivated in the region, as well as at least 70% of the grain produced in South Africa.

A number of minerals are also mined in the Free State, among them gold, coal and diamonds. With 12 gold mines and two gold refineries, the Free State also supplies a considerable share of the silver produced in South Africa. Coal is used to produce chemicals, fuels and waxes.

There are some truly magnificent places to visit in the Free State starting in Bloemfontein which has a number of historical museums and buildings and then continuing towards the Golden Gate National Park which has hiking trails, bird watching and numerous other activities including sports and swimming for the whole family.

Sandstone cliffs with natural sculptures carved into them over the years by the wind and the rain are truly a wonderful vision in the area.

Another area to visit in The Free State is Sterkfontein Dam in Harrismith which is a perfect spot for water sports and fishing. Just past the town there are local caves where paintings done by bushman can be seen.
