Hibiscus Coast

The Hibiscus Coast of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa lies about 120 km south of Durban and includes many lovely resort towns.  Running from Port Edward in the south to Hibberdene in the north, the area includes many lovely and picturesque small towns and villages in between, including the main towns of Margate and Port Shepstone.

The sub-tropical climate is warm and sunny and even in the winter months the sea is pleasantly warm enough for swimming, resulting in tourists and holidaymakers being able to take advantage of the delights of the area throughout the year.

The Hibiscus coast is truly a holidaymaker’s paradise. Aside from the sandy beaches, there are superlative golf courses in the area and exciting activities such as white-water rafting, mountain biking, rock climbing and of course never forgetting that the whole area is an Anglers dream. Two of South Africa’s top 10 golf courses are in the area. Tourists may like to include a day trip to the Oribi Gorge game reserve.

During June or July, depending on the temperature of the sea, the annual sardine run is a sight not to be missed. This is when a shoal of millions of sardines converge along the coast, soon to be followed by many thousands of dolphins and sharks and hundreds of fur seals as well as a variety of other large fish. A possible whale or two can be seen feeding on the enormous amount of sardines, while large flocks of seabirds can be seen sweeping down to get their fill. People have been known to run into the shallow waters, sometimes even in their clothes to gather up as many sardines as they can carry in any container they have at their disposal. KwaZulu-Natal’s annual sardine run is indeed a wondrous sight.

Accommodation for vacationers in this area of KwaZulu-Natal is abundant and is available to suit all requirements and tastes.
