Sport And Culture


South Africa is a nation made up of many different cultures and there is a huge range of different types of sport and culture in the Country.

South African music is  very diverse. Ethnic African music has always been popular and loved by all South Africans, with the sound of the hypnotic African beat, one cannot help but tap their feet and sway to the music – be it to the beat of the Zulu drums, the pennywhistle, the magnificent voice of Miriam Makeba or the harmony of groups like Ladysmith Black Mambazo. There are a number of well known English and Afrikaans singers like Johnny Clegg, and some older ones like Judy Page and4 Jacks and a Jill.

South Africa has also produced some acclaimed authors like Andre Brink, J.M Coetzee, Nadine Gordimer and Alan Paton, and playwright Athol Fugard

Other South African born famous people include actress Charlize Theron, Christiaan Barnard who performed the first successful heart transplant, actor Basil Rathbone and Nobel Peace prize winner Bishop Desmond Tutu.  

South Africa also has a number of world renowned sportsmen – notably golfers Gary Player and Ernie Els, boxer Gerrie Coetzee Formula One world champion Jody Scheckter, and cricketer Jonty Rhodes.

All in all, South Africa’s contribution to music, sport and culture in the world over the years has been monumental.
