Hartebeespoort Dam


Tourists in South Africa, while staying in Johannesburg or Pretoria who are looking for a day trip that is not too far should spend a day at Hartebeespoort Dam which is within easy reach of both cities.

Hartebeespoort Dam lies in a valley surrounded by the Magaliesberg mountain range in Northwest Province and is ideal for both day and weekend trips from Johannesburg and Pretoria The Dam is really picturesque with a number of small villages lining its banks and offers a large range of water sports such as parasailing, windsurfing and water and jet skiing.  The more daring can enjoy a trip in a hot air balloon or maybe paragliding as well as hang gliding.

Aside from the serene beauty provided by the hills valleys and lovely vista of water, there are also many places of interest, fun things to do and entertaining attractions that cater to a variety of tastes.

There is an aquarium, a small zoo with a snake park amongst other places during your visit to Hartebeespoort Dam. Not to be missed is the wonderful Welwitschia Market which sells leather ware, glassware, ceramics, furniture  jewellery, curios and wooden novelties and of course African arts & crafts.

Take a cable car ride to the top of the Magaliesberg where visitors will be able to take in the awe inspiring view. Then have a delicious meal at one of the large selection of restaurants.

For those wishing to stay more than a day, accommodation is plentiful at Inns, B&B’s, self catering facilities and at various lodges, all at very reasonable prices.  Hartebeespoort is on the Sun City road and well worth a stop along the way either for a day, a weekend or longer before you move on to Sun City and Pilanesberg Game Reserve.
