Pilanesberg

One of the many Game Parks to be found in South Africa is Pilanesberg National Park which is situated in the Northwest Province (formerly Northern Transvaal) of South Africa and close to the Sun City Resort. This park is malaria free which makes it a very popular tourist site. A definite must for tourists visiting the country.

The Game reserve is set in the crater of a volcano estimated to be more than a million years old which has been extinct for a long time. It is an area of great natural beauty and has a lovely lake in the centre of the reserve, reflecting the splendour of the Pilanesberg nature park. Originally this area was owned by the three local tribes of the previous independent homeland of Bophuthatswana which has now been incorporated into the new South Africa.

pilanesberg national parkPractically every mammal known in South Africa can be found in the Pilanesberg National Park including the big 5. The Park was opened in 1979 and shortly afterwards a huge animal relocation plan came into effect when more than 6000 animals from other parks in South Africa were brought there. In 1993, lions were also introduced to the park and since then have been thriving and multiplying successfully.

Accommodation at Pilanesberg is varied both within the park itself and in surrounding areas. Visitors can choose to stay in deluxe game lodges and hotels, rest camps with chalets or tents in the park itself and there is also accommodation available in nearby places such as Sun City or the fabulous Palace of the Lost City. Whatever your choice this will be a never to be  forgotten experience.
