Hermanus – Resort Town

About 2 hours drive from Cape Town in South Africa lies Hermanus,  the beautiful seaside resort town on Walker Bay. The town was established in 1855 as a fishing village and since 1904 has been a popular resort.

Today it has become one of South Africa’s foremost tourist destinations, mainly due to the fact that is acknowledged to be unsurpassed worldwide for whale watching throughout the year. Late winter and early autumn are the best times to see the Southern Right Whale when you can watch the whales daily as they frolic in Walker Bay in perfect view from the cliff paths. Watch also for the Dolphins and Seals that play and gambol in the bay.

Hermanus is often described as the Riviera of South Africa and during the summer months thousands of local holidaymakers and visitors from around the world can be seen relaxing on the wide stretch of beach and just enjoying the sun and surf in the bracing climate, surrounded by the magnificent scenery.

Hermanus resort in the Cape Province of South Africa is also a favourite place for sporting and outdoor lovers, offering a wide variety of activities, including water sports of all kinds as well as dolphin and whale watching from boats and for the very brave – diving in cages with Great White Sharks.

Despite the fact that Hermanus is such a popular resort it has never lost its air of being a small fishing village and there are historic places to visit like the Old Fishing Harbour and the Hermanus Magnetic Observatory built in 1912.  Do not forget to visit the Fernkloof Nature Reserve to view the indigenous plants including the Roridula gorgonias, the biggest carnivorous plant of the species.

Interesting shopping facilities are available and coffee shops and good restaurants abound. Accommodation is varied to suit all tastes and pockets, choose from Hotels, luxury Guest Houses, B&B’s and camping facilities.
